# Last-minute hut availability

The famous huts book out months ahead. The network they sit in does not, and the gap between the two is where a last-minute trip lives.

## The huts are not full, they are concentrated

Every summer the same story runs: the Alps are overrun, book in January or do not bother. Every summer it is half true. The huts people have heard of are full. The network they sit in is not.

Across the huts whose booking systems published a bed count through August 2026, 32.6% of hut-nights ended up sold out. Two-thirds still had a bed in them on the night, and over 318,000 beds went unslept in the busiest month of the year.

The clearest evidence sits inside a single famous route. On the Tour du Mont Blanc in August 2026, the Refuge de la Balme sold out on 21 of 29 nights. The Auberge La Roselette, the same kind of place 5.1 km and under two hours' walk away on the same graded ground, sold out on four of 31 and finished the month with 272 spare bed-nights. Same ground, same guidebooks, an hour and fifty minutes apart. The difference is which hut the stage list names.

## What that means for a late booking

It means a last-minute trip is usually a routing problem rather than an availability problem. The beds exist. They are simply not at the hut named in the stage table, on the night the stage table puts you there.

Three things change the odds more than booking earlier would have:

- **Move the night, not the trip.** Most "it is full" problems are

stage-boundary problems. Shifting one night, splitting a stage, or walking two hours further on usually resolves a chain that looks impossible.

- **Ask about a range, never a date.** A hut that is full on your date often has

space the night before or after. Huts that take bookings by phone or email can answer that in one message.

- **Look one massif out.** Reviewed ranges have run under 15% sold out through a

whole August while a neighbouring honeypot ran over 90%. The walking there is not a consolation prize.

## Where the late space actually is

Reviewed regions, share of August 2026 hut-nights sold out:

Reviewed regions - % of August hut-nights sold out

- Ecrins92.7%
- Vanoise63.1%
- Tour du Mont Blanc52.7%
- Karwendel35.3%
- Walker's Haute Route28.0%
- Otztal16.7%
- Zillertal15.5%
- Bernese Oberland14.3%
- Valais and Zermatt8.9%

A tenfold spread inside the same month. Each row counts that region's own huts, and some regions overlap, so the rows compare to each other rather than summing to an Alps-wide figure.

## Cancellations are a real source of late beds

Late space is not only space that was never booked. On Austrian Alpine Club huts, 30 to 40% of reservations are now cancelled, against 15% in 2022, and cancellations often arrive too late for the hut to refill the place. That is bad for the warden and good for anyone still looking, which is why a hut that showed nothing a fortnight ago is worth checking again.

Our [beds released](/radar/) page lists every bed we have seen come open, day by day, from the same daily reading. A hut that has released nights three times in a week is a very different prospect from one that never has.

## How to use this

Give the [route finder](/hut-to-hut-route-finder/) a short date window and the number of nights you have, and let it search rather than picking a route first. A late trip planned that way starts from what is bookable and ends up somewhere good, instead of starting somewhere famous and finding nothing.

Booking always happens on the hut's own system. We take no bookings and no commission, and availability is read once a day, so confirm with the hut before you rely on it.
