HutScanner Terms of Use

1. What HutScanner is

HutScanner is a trip-planning aid for hut-to-hut hiking. It helps you discover huts, routes and indicative availability. It is not a booking service: all bookings are made directly with huts or their official booking platforms, and any contract for accommodation is between you and the hut.

2. Accuracy of information

Hut details, route geometry, distances, walking times, difficulty classifications and availability are derived from third-party and computed data. They are provided in good faith but are estimates and may be wrong, incomplete or out of date. Always verify availability, opening dates, route conditions and difficulty with official sources before relying on them. Regions marked Reviewed have had an additional manual checking pass; this reflects the effort put in, not a guarantee that every detail is correct. Regions marked Unreviewed are shown as gathered from automated sources and have not yet had that pass.

3. Mountain safety - your responsibility

Mountain travel involves serious risks including injury and death. HutScanner is not a navigation device, a safety service, or a substitute for appropriate experience, equipment, route research, weather checks and local advice. You are solely responsible for your own safety and for judging whether a route is within your ability. Routes marked as demanding, glacier or via ferrata terrain require specific skills and equipment.

HutScanner is not an emergency or rescue service and may not work without a network or GPS signal, in poor weather, or in remote terrain. In an emergency, contact the local emergency number directly (112 in the EU and UK, or the relevant number for your location) - do not rely on this app to summon help.

4. Subscriptions, billing and cancellation

You must be at least 18, or the age of legal capacity where you live, to purchase a subscription. HutScanner's core map and routing are free to use. Some features (such as the route finder and availability calendar) may require a paid subscription. Where a charge applies, the price and what it covers are shown clearly before you are asked to pay. In the mobile apps, payments are processed by the Apple App Store or Google Play and charged to your store account under their terms. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe. In every case card details are handled by the payment provider - we never see or store them.

We currently offer two options:

• Annual subscription - an auto-renewing subscription billed once per year. It renews automatically for a further year at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your store account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends.
• 1-month pass - a one-time, non-renewing purchase that grants access for 30 days. It does not auto-renew and is not charged again; buy another pass to continue.

Managing or cancelling: if you subscribed in a mobile app, manage or cancel the auto-renewing subscription in your store account settings - on iOS via Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, on Android via Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. If you subscribed on the web (via Stripe), cancel your annual subscription by emailing hi@hutscanner.com. Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the period already paid for. (The 1-month pass does not renew, so there is nothing to cancel.)

Prices and changes: prices are shown in your local currency in the app and may vary by region and over time. If we change the price of an auto-renewing subscription, we will seek your consent as required by the store before the new price takes effect.

Refunds: for mobile purchases, refunds are handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play under their respective policies - request one from the store you bought through (Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com; Google: Play → order history). For web purchases made through Stripe, request a refund by emailing hi@hutscanner.com. Statutory rights that cannot be excluded are unaffected.

5. Your data

HutScanner has no accounts. The routes and preferences you create are stored on your own device. See our Privacy Policy for details.

6. Acceptable use

HutScanner is for personal, non-commercial trip planning. Please don't resell or redistribute its compiled datasets, and don't disrupt the service or place excessive automated load on it.

7. Intellectual property

The app, its design and its compiled datasets are ours or our licensors'. Underlying open data remains under its own licences (CC BY-SA 2.0 for refuges.info; ODbL for OpenStreetMap) as set out on the About screen.

We assert database rights in our compiled datasets. Substantial investment has been made in collecting, reviewing, correcting and maintaining them, and in bringing together information that is otherwise scattered across many separate sources. This includes our hut records and the walking-route network built from them, and it includes the combined availability information we assemble from numerous individual booking systems - the aggregation itself is the investment, and it is not available from any single source. Extraction or re-utilisation of a substantial part of these datasets, whether by automated means or otherwise, and whether in one act or by repeated extraction of smaller parts, is not permitted without our written consent.

8. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, HutScanner is provided "as is" and we exclude liability for losses arising from reliance on the app's information. This includes, without limitation, incorrect or out-of-date hut information; booking links that point to the wrong hut or an outdated page; availability that turns out to be wrong; failed, missed or mistaken bookings; routes or paths that are impassable, unsafe, longer or harder than shown, or do not exist on the ground; inaccurate distances, walking times or difficulty ratings; route conditions; and any events occurring in the mountains. You are responsible for verifying hut details, bookings and route conditions with official sources before you travel. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law (such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence).

9. Changes

We may update these terms; material changes will be flagged in the app. Continued use means acceptance.

10. Governing law

England and Wales; courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction (mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence are unaffected).

11. Severability

If any provision of these terms is found invalid or unenforceable by a court, that provision will be limited or removed to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
