About Valais / Zermatt
The Valais around Zermatt and the Monte Rosa massif holds some of the highest huts in the Alps, spanning the Swiss and Italian sides of the watershed. Swiss huts book through the shared Alpenverein system with live traffic-light availability; the Italian rifugi on the Monte Rosa side mostly book through their own pages or by phone. Many routes here cross glaciated terrain, so check the approach for each hut before you rely on a walking time.
